With the original emcee gone in search of a solo career, the now two-man group hit the lab and did not emerge until recently. The end result is the highly anticipated, 21-track debut album which features instrumentals by the duo, and guest appearances from some of their favorite artists including Little Brother (ABB Records), Asheru of Unspoken Heard (7 Heads), and Maspyke. "We are big fans of all of the artists featured on the album," says Jason Skills. "It’s nice to hear your favorite emcees on your tracks. It takes the music to a place that you might not normally take it." A portion of the album was recorded by the artists’ who made special guest appearances on it with the exception of The Procussions track, "5 Minutes." That song was recorded at a well-known studio in Los Angeles where Jason is a freelance engineer. "We wanted to cut the vocals for ‘5 Minutes’ so I waited for a session to get done early, called The Procussions, snuck them in and hooked it up! while none of the other engineers were around," said Jason. "We knocked out the whole thing in one night!" The remaining tracks on the album, mainly the instrumentals and interludes, were recorded at both Soulo and Jason’s respective studios. Part hip-hop, part jazz, the duo draw from the music that influenced them while growing up to create a soulful vibe infused with bebop, funk, and everything in between.

Break Mechanics is a hip hop crew getting a lot of attention in Denver's underground hip hop community. Their music is a combination of many styles but stays true to the roots of hip hop, with drums, bass and keyboards backing live MCs.

Break Mechanics have held long-time residencies at Denver clubs and performed with Blackalicious, Slick Rick and KRS-1.

The foundation of Break Mechanics is a wide range of musical experience and styles. Daren Hahn (drums) has played with Ani DiFranco, the Eels and Geggy Tah. Casey Sidwell (bass) plays with Denver-based Future Jazz Project, which also features MC Paas on the mic. Greg Raymond (keys) has toured extensively with the Motet from Boulder.

The result is "Break Mechanics," their self-titled and first CD, with serious musical integrity and hip hop legitimacy.

The Foreign Exchange first "met" in mid-2002, when Phonte (who resides in North Carolina and is also a member of the underground rap trio Little Brother), heard some of Nicolay’s music online and asked to rhyme over one of his tracks. When Big Pooh of Little Brother, lent his vocals to the track, the song became "Light It Up," and was featured as a B-side single for the group’s acclaimed 2003 effort, The Listening. "Nic was sending me some of the most beautiful stuff I’d ever heard in my life," Phonte says emphatically. "They inspired me so much that I just had to do something over them." The end result is Connected, a gorgeous and reflective blend of hip-hop, R&B, and electronic soul.

While Phonte serves as the duo’s main vocalist, the group is quick to point out that Connected is not a "Phonte solo album," and is instead an ensemble record with Nicolay and Phonte acting as the project’s conductors. When Slum Village emerged in the 1990s, they were ostensibly a trio of Jay Dee, T3, and Baatin, However, the Detroit group quickly anounced itself a fluid collective, with members free to drop in and out. They weren't kidding, as on three major releases the group has sported different line-ups each time. DETROIT DELI finds Slum Village a duo of T3 and more recent addition Elzhi. However, all that turnover sees no drop-off in the level of the music and the discourse.

If anything, Slum Village is at the top of its game on DETROIT DELI, flying from the gritty to the smooth to the funky with the greatest of ease. The outfit also displays its usual range in topics, from delivering a tender ode to ghetto womanhood on "Old Girl/Shining Star" to boasting defiantly, as on the club banger "Keep Holding On." The crew can employ unique and almost experimental beats, as on "Dirty" (fittingly featuring Dirt McGirt) and slide into the smoothest of comfortable grooves (the sweetly sly single "Selfish"). Jay Dee returns with a flourish on "Reunion," but the band's assertion of fluidity remains true, as whatever the official membership, Slum Village consistently releases complexly beautiful records. DETROIT DELI continues that trend.

Two years after Jurassic 5's debut album, Quality Control, proved that B-boy-oriented retro-rap doesn't have to be corny, the six-member crew (four MCs and two DJs) seems to be gearing up for the revolution. While fans of Quality Control's bright sound will still find much to enjoy here, J5's sophomore offering does a good job at extending their sound. Opening with "Freedom," a quiet yet focused call to action, Power in Numbers presents a slightly darker vision of hip-hop nirvana than the group offered first time around. In keeping with the album's title, J5 has also expanded its crew--Percy P. (of the early-90s underground group, Double XX Posse) and Big Daddy Kane help wreck the G Rap-esque "A Day at the Races," and the always game alterna-diva, Nelly Furtado, lends a surprisingly effective pop edge to the bouncy "Thin Line." On the production end of things, Juju of the Beatnuts adds his special blend of Colombian madness to the jazzy "If You Only Knew" and the considerably bleaker "One of Them." --Rebecca Levine
